BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Plano Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible gate frame components, hinge rebuilds, and bracket reinforcements across Plano, with most welded repairs running $280-$640 installed depending on the extent of the fracture and whether the gate needs to be removed from its hinges. Same-day welding is available on most jobs since our trucks carry portable MIG equipment, and we’ll match the exact BFT bracket geometry before we strike an arc. The typical failure shows up one of two ways: either the gate sags noticeably at the latch side and scrapes the driveway, or a hinge ear cracks through and the gate shifts several inches out of level overnight.

Here is what we see most often in Plano. A homeowner opens the gate one morning, hears a metallic groan instead of the usual hum, and notices the leaf no longer lines up with the receiver post. Sometimes it’s a hairline crack running through a weld at the hinge plate. Sometimes the bottom rail has rusted from the inside where sprinkler overspray hit it every other day for five years. Either way, the fix is structural, not a software setting. You have a physical break, and it needs metal work.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

This applies to the full range of BFT swing and slide gate operators installed across Texas residential and light commercial properties, including the Deimos, Phobos, Thalia, and Sub series. The welding and fabrication work we do is not inside the motor itself. It is on the gate structure the BFT operator is moving: hinge ears, frame rails, rack mounts for slide gates, operator base plates, and the steel posts that hold your BFT motor and limit hardware in place.

The compatibility question for welding is less about the operator model and more about the gate itself. We need to know three things before we heat metal: the wall thickness of your gate frame (we see 16-gauge to 11-gauge commonly in Plano residential installs), whether the gate is steel or ornamental iron, and whether the original fabrication used through-bolts at the hinge points or surface welds only. Surface-welded hinge plates are the most common failure point we repair, because a weld has no mechanical fastener backing it up. We match the existing bracket geometry, reinforce with gussets where the design allows it, and photograph every weld bead before and after grinding so you can see exactly what was done.

OEM versus aftermarket matters more for operator brackets than frame steel. If your BFT mounting plate is cracked, we prefer an OEM or dimensionally identical replacement bracket because the bolt pattern has to match your operator’s base exactly. For frame repair and gusset fabrication, we cut and fit steel to your gate’s existing dimensions on site, which means we are not waiting on a factory part for most structural fixes. Vance Gate Repair Plano is an independent service provider and not affiliated with BFT, but we do stock BFT mounting hardware and limit switch brackets on the truck alongside parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • Gate sags at the latch corner and drags on the driveway. The hinge side has usually dropped because a hinge plate weld is pulling away from the post or the frame rail is bowing under the gate’s own weight. The operator keeps running, but the leaf is no longer traveling in its original plane.
  • A hairline crack runs through a weld bead or along the edge of a hinge ear. This is metal fatigue, not a one-time impact. The crack started small and widened over months of open-close cycles. Once you can see it with the naked eye, the remaining weld area is carrying more stress than it was built for.
  • The gate rattles or bangs against the BFT limit stop even when the limit switch setting has not changed. Something shifted structurally. When the physical stop point moves because a weld loosened or a rail bowed, the operator keeps running to its programmed stop and the gate meets the hardware at a different angle.
  • Rust staining bleeds from inside the bottom rail near a weld joint. Texas humidity and sprinkler overspray work from the inside out on steel gates. By the time you see rust streaks on the exterior, the section loss is often significant enough to warrant cutting out and replacing that rail section rather than patching over it.
  • The BFT operator sounds labored or trips its obstruction sensing more often than it used to. The motor is working against increased friction from a gate that no longer swings true. A misaligned gate can trip the torque limiter on a Deimos or Phobos even when nothing is actually in the path.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Plano, a straightforward hinge ear re-weld or crack repair runs $280-$420 including labor, material, and cleanup. Rebuilding a lower frame rail that has rusted through from sprinkler overspray runs $420-$640, depending on how much of the original steel has to be cut out and replaced. The spread comes down to three things: whether the gate has to come off its hinges to repair it properly, how much grinding and paint matching the repair requires, and whether the post itself is the problem. A gate leaf can be repaired. A failed post usually means setting a new one.

Every welded repair quote is written before any work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. You will see the price for the repair, the price for any bracket or hinge replacement if needed, and the cost of prime and paint on the repaired area. We do not quote an hourly welding rate and let the invoice land where it lands. You get a flat written price. The work itself carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that weld fails within a year, we fix it at no charge. No argument, no fee, no expiration date within that window.

What you can safely check is the evidence on the gate. Look at the hinge plates with a flashlight. Run your hand along the underside of the bottom rail and feel for rust scale or cracks. If you find one, take a photo before you do anything else, because that photo tells us a lot about where the stress is concentrated. What you should not do is attempt a structural weld on a BFT-operated gate without professional equipment and proper joint preparation. Welding a cracked hinge ear without removing the gate load, grinding out the crack fully, and reinforcing the joint with a gusset will leave you with the same failure a few months later, now hidden under new paint.

There is also the electrical side to respect. If a rack mount or motor bracket repair requires touching the junction box or repositioning the BFT operator, we disconnect and lock out power before starting. If you are comfortable documenting what you found, call us at (972) 236-7089 and describe it. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a field repair or something bigger. The estimate is free, including the second opinion on any written quote you have already received from another company.
