FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Plano Owner’s Guide

Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the FAAC operator strains and trips its thermal overload, or the gate sags visibly at the hinge side. By the time the motor complains, the weld has usually been failing for weeks. Which FAAC Models This Applies To

The operator model matters less than what the operator is bolted to. A FAAC 770 on a cracked steel post needs the same repair as a 415 on a sagging aluminum frame: the metal gets cut back to clean material, gusseted where the load path demands it, and re-welded with the correct filler for the base metal.

Before we quote anything, we identify three things: the gate leaf material (steel, aluminum, or wrought iron), the post condition behind the hinge or bracket, and the thickness of the metal where the weld failed. A gate that cracked at a 1/8-inch wall tube needs a different approach than one that tore a 3/16-inch plate. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for FAAC specifically: the welded brackets and mounting plates FAAC ships are fine, but they’re generic. That usually costs 10 to 15 percent more than an off-the-shelf bracket and solves fitment problems the factory part never anticipated.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Visible cracking at any weld joint. Hairline fractures near hinges, operator brackets, or gate corners mean the metal is work-hardening and will tear. What starts as a 1/4-inch crack becomes a split corner within a few hundred open-close cycles.
• The gate drags or scrapes on the closing side. A sagging gate frame is a welding problem before it’s a motor problem. The weld at the hinge side has stretched or cracked, and the leaf is now levering against the operator every time it moves.
• The FAAC operator trips its overload or thermal protection repeatedly. The motor is drawing more current because the gate frame is binding. The operator is telling you the mechanical load changed. Weld repair comes first; motor repair comes after the frame is true again.
• Rust staining or flaking paint at a joint. Water got into a pinhole or crack, and corrosion is doing the rest. In Plano’s freeze-thaw winters, a small rust pocket expands and contracts until the weld fails completely.
• The gate bounces or shudders when it stops. That oscillation means a joint is loose or a weld has cracked internally. The metal is flexing where it should be rigid, and the FAAC’s stop profile can’t compensate for a frame that won’t hold still.

DIY or Call Us?

If you have a MIG welder and you know the difference between ER70S-6 and 4043 filler, you can probably handle a simple crack on a steel gate. But here’s where Plano owners get hurt: welding on a gate that’s still attached to a FAAC operator. If you don’t disconnect the operator arm and release the manual override first, the gate can move mid-weld, and you’re now fighting a 300-pound leaf while holding a live arc. That’s how fingers get lost.

Aluminum gates are a different animal entirely. They need AC TIG or a spool gun, and if you weld aluminum with steel wire because that’s what’s on the machine, the joint will fail within a year and look fine on the outside.
