Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds its residential swing gate systems around two primary product families: the standard-series operator arms (AXDP, TSS1, TDS2, and the newer R Series motorized swing arms) and the gate hardware that mates to them. The welding and fabrication work we handle in Plano applies to nearly every Ghost Controls installation, because the welded components (the gate frame itself, the hinge brackets bolted to the post, the post mounting plates, and the operator arm mounting brackets) are structural steel, not Ghost Controls-branded parts. Ghost Controls supplies the motors and controls. The steel they bolt onto is generally fabricated by whoever built the gate.

Here is the compatibility gotcha: Ghost Controls makes two operator arm mounting bracket styles, and they are not interchangeable. The older TSS1 and AXDP series use a narrower U-channel bracket with 2½-inch bolt spacing. The R Series uses a wider bracket with 3-inch spacing and a thicker gauge. If you have an older Ghost Controls motor and need a new bracket fabricated, we need to know the series before we cut steel. A bracket drilled for the wrong spacing will bolt up loose and throw the arm geometry off just enough to burn out the motor over a season.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for the fabricated steel, there is no Ghost Controls OEM part to order. Ghost Controls sells the actuator, the control board, the remote, and some arm hardware. The welded gate frame, the post brackets, and the reinforcement plates are custom-made or locally sourced. That means a Plano welded repair can be fabricated to fit your specific gate without waiting on a drop-shipped part. We do stock aftermarket hinge bearings, weld-on pivot blocks, and post mounting plates in standard sizes, and we can fabricate non-standard brackets in the shop when the truck stock doesn’t match what a particular Plano gate needs.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate scrapes the ground or the latch post on the closing swing. This usually means a hinge weld has broken or a hinge bearing has worn, letting the gate pivot on a sloppy axis. The gate drags lower on the arc of its swing. We see this on Plano gates with sandy soil under the posts; the post shifts a quarter inch over three or four years, the hinge binds, and the weld eventually cracks.
• The Ghost Controls motor strains or chatters near the end of travel. The actuator is fighting a gate that no longer swings true. Bent frame steel or a sagging weld joint puts side-load on the arm, and the motor has to push harder to hit the limit. Left alone, that extra load shortens the motor’s life measurably.
• You can see a visible crack at a weld joint, usually at the hinge or the lower frame corner. This is not a cosmetic issue. A cracked weld changes the structural load path, and every open-close cycle works the crack wider. In Plano’s clay soil, which expands and contracts with moisture, a hinge weld under stress will fail completely within a few weeks of the first visible crack.
• The gate frame flexes when you push against it with one hand. A properly welded residential gate should feel rigid. If the frame twists or the pickets rattle against the rails, a weld has loosened or the original fabrication used tubing too light for the gate’s width. We frequently reinforce Plano gates built from 14-gauge tube when the design called for 11-gauge.
• The operator arm mounting bracket has pulled away from the gate or post by more than 1/8 inch. That bracket is the interface between the Ghost Controls motor and the gate. If the weld or bolts are working loose, the motor cannot apply force cleanly. Look at the bracket with the gate closed; if you can slip a coin between the bracket and the steel it is mounted to, call us before the bracket tears free.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner who knows their way around a welder can handle a cosmetic crack on a non-structural picket, and we will not talk you out of that.
